The only reason for dropping support for the old format would be that
the code doing the import gradually becomes more obscure by sections
which appear to be for importing xyz but are now just legacy import code
- the real xyz import that needs changing is elsewhere. I do mark these
legacy things in the code with comments as they arise, but they do
somewhat impede development. The case I recall was the encoding of slurs
which I dropped after only a year - perhaps that was too soon, but I
think in that case the old code was really hindering seeing what went
on.

The idea of having an update script is to avoid carrying the old code
around forever, but I confess to not having bothered to update myself
and I do have hundreds of scores. I guess I'm expecting to fix any
problem I ever run in to.

Well, I happy to hear what others may think ...
