The term Software Radio was coined by Joseph Mitola in 1991 to signal the
shift from the hardware intensive digital radios of the 1980's to the
multiband multimode software-defined radios of the year 2000 and beyond.
The transition to software radio is regarded as one of the great paradigm
shifts in wireless communications.

GNU Radio is a Free Software toolkit that aims to provide a complete framework
for development of prototype software radios. It allows users to concentrate
on algorithms and protocols instead of scheduling, multithreading, drivers,
etc. The GNU Radio Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) is a low-cost
piece of hardware which allows users to quickly implement and deploy very
advanced, flexible software radio systems very easily. It is entirely a Free
Hardware design.

In tonight's presentation, Matt will be talking about the motivations for,
applications of, and internal design of GNU Radio and the USRP. He will also
be talking about the development process, legal implications, and successes of
GNU Radio so far.

About our speaker:

Matt Ettus (address@hidden) has been a developer with the GNU Radio Project
for the last 2-1/2 years, and is the lead developer of the Universal Software
Radio Peripheral. He has been a radio amateur for over 13 years and a Linux
user for 8, and has made numerous contributions to several open source
electrical engineering CAD programs.

In his day job, Matt does Communication System and DSP design for a Bluetooth
semiconductor company. Previously he has designed GPS systems as well as some
of the caches in the UltraSPARC III microprocessor. He lives in the SF Bay
area and enjoys sailing and soccer.
