For some reason @ASFLAGS@ is not getting expanded.
I note below that you've got automake 1.5 and 1.9.4.
1.5 is too old. I'm not familiar with gentoo, so I don't know what to
tell you, but if there's a way to ensure it's using automake-1.9.4, try
that.
