I  once  had  activestate python installed on this
machine.  It  would  appear  that  was a lingering
issue with it's removal. I renamed the ~/local/lib
such  that  any  links  would  be  broken.  It now
compiles  just  fine  and  I  opened  GRC,  so I'm
listing  this  as SOLVED. Thanks very much for the
help.
