cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/local ../ for the cmake line in the tutorial was the cure. This re-targeted the "make install" to /opt/local which is the “port” OS X install location for gnuradio. Starting gnuradio-companion then had the tutorial block added just like it’s supposed to. Thank you for the help.
