problems compiling ffcall on Darwin

I try to build a nx-gnu-gnu-xgps library combo on Darwin. So I tried to compile ffcall-1.6b entering the following commands:

        ./configure --prefix=$GNUSTEP_SYSTEM_ROOT --datadir=$GNUSTEP_SYSTEM_ROOT/Documentation/html/ffcall
went flawlessly

        make
gave the following output:
cd avcall; make -r all
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `avcall-unknown.lo', needed by `avcall.lo'.  Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2

        make debug=yes
same as above

        make install
never reached :-(

What can I do?
