no that doesnot help.
I did do something else meanwhile.
although the guide doesnot say so, i did 
make install for the xgps directory in core.
then the errors change:

now i dont think that the backend is a problem. i am positive that
gdomap, gdnc and gpbs are working. so why is GWorkspace not finding it?
