Oddities building gui

this is on a clean system - when building it by build finishes with:

Making all for bundle libgmodel...
 Compiling file IMCustomObject.m ...
 Compiling file IMConnectors.m ...
 Compiling file IMLoading.m ...
 Compiling file GMAppKit.m ...
 Compiling file GMArchiver.m ...
 Linking bundle libgmodel ...
/usr/libexec/elf/ld: cannot find -lgnustep-gui
gmake[2]: *** [libgmodel.bundle/ix86/freebsd/gnu-gnu-gnu/libgmodel] Error 1
gmake[1]: *** [libgmodel.all.bundle.variables] Error 2
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/home/pete/gnustep/core/gui/Model'

But I have a libgnustep-gui.so in ./Source/shared_obj/ix86/freebsd/gnu-gnu-gnu/
and the directory is being added to the link path with -L

Hmmm....

Any ideas ?
