JPEG Backgrounds for WindowMaker

Hi,
        I have been using WindowMaker 0.80.0 for several months and recently installed the jpeg libraries and wanted to use the WindowMaker themes.  I have recompiled and reinstalled WindowMaker with the jpeg library present.  When I do a ldd wmaker it list the jpeg, xpm, png, tiff, bmp as well as some other system libraries.  When I select a theme everything changes except it does not load the background.  I tried to load a background manually and this failed as well.  I tried to run wmaker.inst but I got a bad substitution error.  Does anyone have any ideas ?
