The bug still exists with the xlib backend. I am going to try the art backend,

I cant remember where the official download places are, but you can just
grab my set from http://toybox.twisted.org.uk/~pete/art.fonts.tar.gz and
unpack it in your home directory and it will give you a nicely populated
set of fonts in ./GNUstep/Library/Fonts - the download is about 9MB.

Thanks! It is really your nice contribution to the project and, I think,
gives newbies a good starting point (who might be exhausted with the
installation of the new freetype library. They must be impatient to
see the result. You can imagine how I was disappointed when I got
the message, "No fonts found".) It made the installation much easier.

I really y think some default fonts should be shipped with GNUstep and
if the freetype issues can be worked out that art should be the default
backend. Moving to art has made working with GNustep *so* much nicer - its
second only to Renaissance on my list of mpost influential changes I've
made to my programming technique in the last 12 months.

Sounds good. Until such a nice decision is made, however, I wish there
would be a README in the back package that explains how to set up the
art backend. I'm wondering why README is missing in the package.
