It depends it is outputed into the PDF. Because actually there is no available PDF on sontract, thre is part of code but nothing is finnalize, there is a task on this subject. But in a way your right, the real goal is to add "free numbering rule".

I don't see this is gonna be solved with a ref_ext field, I think it is a different field for a different purpose

I propose to solve this issue by creating a ref_int field on contract.
