Why?

MS would tell the internet users that centralizing our data makes it possible to access that data on any device through their framework.  What they tell the stockholders is that this will stabilize (and increase) their revenue stream.  It also means that they can draw customer revenues by simply "linking" their MSN front-end to financial, educational, and personal institutions.

If MS can convince the world to expose all their processes to web services, then they can offer a package to customers to manage their entire life through one central channel: Microsoft.

I'm an avid Yahoo user, and Yahoo offers much of what MS promises with Hailstorm as far as actual services are concerned.  Yahoo already provides much of that information through back-end partnering with other institutions.  I enjoy the integration, and use it constantly.  What MS calls a "new initiative" is really an old idea, rebranded and remarketed to convince the world that they need MS.

So the short answer is, centralized management of resources.  Instead of entering all our data in Quicken or Money, our "service provider" pulls all that data from our bank, credit card, and investment sites and presents that to us in one package.  I would use that.  I pay for Quicken.  Why wouldn't I pay for the service?

The WebSevice model also as us, as end
users, to move much, if not all, the
actual program functions off our local
device and onto remote servers.

Again, why?

What clear answeres do we have to these
questions? From a users point of view,
what do we say?
