Yup. Finally got that working too. (And
you're right, I was probably making some inaccurate assumptions, but I was
trying all sorts of command-lines.)
Could be partly the 0.4.9 "upgrade" that helped as
well.

The given example is missing a local verification
target.
You are running:
$ duplicity ... ftp://address@hidden/DISK
2/duplicity
You should be running:
$ duplicity ...
ftp://address@hidden/DISK
2/duplicity /Working/Copy
Unlike some other backup software, duplicity
does not automatically qualify the working copy from information in the
backup volume for restoration and verification.
It does, however,
notice and complain if the source changes for an incremental
backup.
