Am I correct in thinking that if the worst happens, I can restore the
backup from just the encrypted files that duplicity has made?
(Thus, I can exclude the .caches archive-dir manually at no cost.)


cost is that duplicity will recreate the cache (archive-dir) if it's missing or 
not up to date. Only if your line is really slow you should try avoid that. 
Another thought for you. Essentially archive-dir is a cache only, that's 
probably why ken chose to put it into ~/.cache per default.
