1. switch to *scratch*
2. M-x set-input-method RET TeX RET
3. Type "xyz", C-a
3. Type "\alpha" (see alpha, verify TeX input method)
4. Type "\a" then DELETE (delete key, not backspace).
At step 4, the delete operates as backward delete, not forward delete.

This is a feature: lisp/international/quail.el binds DELETE to
quail-delete-last-char.
