Try edubug-defun in the *scratch* buffer on a sexp like this:
(setq foo 'bar)
Even if it finished, it keeps the buffer remaining read-only.
In GNU Emacs 24.3.50.1 (i686-pc-cygwin, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
