2. M-: eldoc-mode => nil
3. Type (defun |), see the function signature in the echo area.
4. M-x eldoc-mode makes no difference either way.

This is a good question, and I'd like to know the rationale for the
existence of both of them, too.  I'm forwarding it to help-gnu-emacs and
closing the bug at ths same time.
