The BYTE_CODE_THREADED definition in bytecode.c:

#define BYTE_CODE_THREADED
#endif
does not work when compiling with an old compiler: gcc-2.96
It probably needs to be refined to exclude older gccs.

gcc 2.96 was obsolete when this report was new.
4 years on, it's really really obsolete.
Given the lack of interest in this report, I think it is now time to
close it as wontfix.
