Er, not really.

As a matter of act, `yellow' is also quite horrible on a light-background
tty (at least in an xterm).

I don't think you can really get away with using one set of faces for both.

I guess the problem is that there's no good automatic way of setting the
emacs background-mode on a tty.  The only thing I can think of is to
continue to assume ttys are dark-background (because that's true for real
terminals and most PC consoles), but add some kind of special hack (I know
not what) for xterms & other X terminal emulators, which are the main cases
of light-background ttys that I can think of.  People telneting in from a
macintosh will just have to learn how to customize frame-background-mode...
