I get 4-fold slowdown in redisplay, relative to v20.5 :-(  This is
with the MS-DOS version, so it probably means that the tty version
will also exhibit similar slowdown.

Interestingly enough, v20.5 works at about the same speed as v21.1
when the window is split horizontally (e.g., with C-x 3).
