Hi,
The smtpmail.el we use in Emacs 21.1. does not have support to
authorize before sending mail SMTP-AUTH. This was reportedly
available back in year 2000. If my reference is right as per the
contents of the following URL:
http://mail.gnu.org/pipermail/help-gnu-emacs/2000-January/001280.html
Since many POP/SMTP servers expect authorization before sending
mails, I guess this is a serious handicap.
