I want the same that you want, so my idea was to implement both
cases. There is a user option (however implemented) so that people
can choose whether they have a Richard-style compilation buffer that
they can just type at or whether they have a Thien-Thi-style
compilation buffer with a send-line command. (The Richard style
would be default.)
