If I understand this right:

You type:

address@hidden

No expansion after the first dot, but expansion after the second.
Still does not happen for me.  I see you are using 21.2.50.

To me the two most likely explanations are:

1. I still am misunderstanding you.

2. This bug is due to changes made in mailabbrev.el between version
   21.1.90, which I am using, and 21.2.50.
