    The problem is that there is no named face which has this appearence,
    so I cannot simply put a (face mode-line-bold) property on the string
    returned by format-mode-line.

The value of the face property can include multiple faces as well as
attribute-value pairs.  It should be easy to construct something of
that form to represent whatever you need.  You can simply take the
various faces and attributes that you find in the various face
properties coming in, concatenate them all, and use the combined
value.

Is there a reason that won't work?
