That is a good idea--simple, painless, and probably useful.

    What do you think about doing a custom type for mode-line-format?  It
    could be a list of variables whose names match the regexp "mode-line".

That seems like a good idea too.  The custom type could be a series of
elements, each chosen from the set of suitable symbol names.
