No, this does not currently happen. I used to have such an
expansion, but it caused problems with completion: Emacs got confused
about the length of the string in the minibuffer.
Possibly, the problems were caused by Tramp doing that expansion in
many places, not just expand-file-name. I should investigate this,
but I haven't done so yet, and I'm not sure when I can find the time.
