I'd consider some of the capitalization achieved for free software

I can't help but wonder, wouldn't Cygnus have continued to develop GCC
and make a decent living at it, even if it hadn't been acquired by
Redhat?

We profit in some ways from it. Of course, there is also backlash
when business finds itself having problems from exalted expectations.

Freedom often isn't "profitable"; what it does do is make our lives
better in myriad intangible, but important ways.
