I misunderstood this. The edited value does indeed seem to get used,
whether it fits the intended meaning of "other" or not. So if the
:format contains a %v, the user can choose "other" to customize the
option as if it were a 'sexp.
I am not immediately sure whether or not that means that
(define-widget 'other 'sexp
is appropriate after all.
