cvs head crash on woe32

 of 2004-02-25 on WINSTEINGOLDLAP
--with-msvc (12.00)

I get a fairly reproducible crash on w32:
when emacs is busy (reading a large file, dired a network directory,
gnus &c), hit arrow keys at random.  the result is a crash - apparently
as soon as the lengthy operation is over.
