Maybe it's more obvious in XEmacs, but... boy it's ugly!!

Basically, I find that changing the background color on a piece of the
display should be only acceptable under one of the following conditions:
- it is a field-like thingy (as is does for editable stuff in Custom).
- it is done over whole lines.
- it is *really* *really* important for the user to look at it *right now*
  (can't think of any example).
- it is transient (like the region).
- we change the display engine so as to make it less ugly.  One way to do
  that would be to "rounden" ("make round") the corners of the rectangular
  area.
