Does not sound like it should be a variable for general use.  Whether
to export it into the Lisp name space at all for the sake of
debugging is a different question.

Oh, but we already cleared that my concerns actually were not
reflected in any problems with the current preview-latex code base
(which incidentally would have worked), but rather were voiced on
theoretical grounds, like it not being nice to change documented
behavior from the Elisp manual in too surprising ways.
