Font handling in Carbon Emacs

I don't really get how fonts work on a Mac with emacs.  I've seen a
couple of places that talk about how they are slightly different.  I
understand that emacs expects an X type font specification.  What I've
done is

(add-to-list 'default-frame-alist
     '(font . "-apple-lucida sans
typewriter-medium-r-normal--0-0-75-75-m-0-mac-roman"))

In my font book I can see that I have a ludica sans typewriter.  I got
the above font string by doing M-x set-default-font and then tabbing
through until I found the lucida I wanted.  That was the only font
available to set-default-font that was lucida sans typewriter medium
regular.

What happs is nothing.  I'm still stuck with ugly old monaco.  No
matter what font I set (either with the default-frame-alist variable
or the set-default-font command) I still have monaco.  I can tell by
looking at the resulting font, but also describe-font (for default)
shows I'm still using monaco.  There are no messages in the *Message*
buffer to clue me into what happened.
