Hi Andreas -

Thanks - you are always good for solid facts.
So, yes, there exists, or has existed, a compiler or compilation setup
where an error was returned for a missing final newline.
(1988 "Gnu on 386 running UNIX" is not very specific.)

That makes it extra clear why it is very useful to have the warning
provided by setting require-final-newline to ask.
