In a 3-button mouse:

  mouse-1 is the left button.
  mouse-2 is the midlle button.
  mouse-3 is the right button.

In a 2-button mouse:

  mouse-1 is the left button.
  mouse-2 is the left and right button pressed at same time.
  mouse-3 is the right button.

Also, some mouses have the wheel as the middle button.
