Unfortunately, it didn't the trick.  I put the following lines
in the ~/.Xdefaults file, read it using xrdb and started
/usr/bin/emacs (which comes from the Fedora Core 4).

*useXim: false
Emacs*useXim: false
emacs*useXim: false
