Tooltip are for me normally over point, and therefore over the text
most recently written, hiding it. I need it to go away to see what I
wrote last so I can continue there. To be able to do it I must either
insert some character I don't really want to type or reach over for the
mouse.

Did you ever realize how much text fits in eighty columns? If you now consider
that a signature usually consists of up to four lines, this gives you enough
space to spread a tremendous amount of information with your messages. So seize
this opportunity and don't waste your signature with bullshit nobody will read.
