is that by now this term is also known to people who don't use Emacs.

It's the concept that counts, and none of the merit is taken away from Emacs if the term denotating the concept changes.

But if you look up a term in a corpus such as Google's, you will want to have a look at the distribution of its alternate, near-synonymous variants.

"key bindings" --> 277,000
"key shortcuts" --> 111,000
"keyboard commands" --> 311,000
"key commands" --> 208,000
"keyboard shortcuts" --> 2,630,000 hits
