Its an unusual requirement, so its probably best to leave things as they
are, certainly till after the release.

One reason is because they are un-intuitive, as you say below.  Using on the
fringe only requires one click.  Also, why have them when they are not needed?
It leaves more room for other buttons.

Richard tried to find a graphic designer a few years back.  There were one or
two attempts to improve the icons, but people on the list, including myself,
didn't really like the results.
