It should be added to the menu-bar Custom menu.

    You would also expect something about finding customizations to be in
    the info that is displayed when you press the 'Help' button, but there
    is nothing obvious....

    customize-apropos-groups, or customize-apropos-faces.  There should be.

I agree. Finding stuff quickly and easily is what it's all about. Customize
is a navigational nightmare, and the apropos commands help quite a bit.
Let's make them more visible (point out, add to menu,...).
