There are also issues of legibility which make it undesirable to use lines
longer than 80 chars unless a significant portion is devoted to whitepspace
(e.g. indentation, but note that excessive indentation usually leads to
unreadable code and it's then preferable to extract the inner code into its
own function).

I think it's important to make sure that if people really want to write
illegible text and unreadable code they can do it.  But I also think that
it's even more important to make sure that for sane people things work as
best as they can.
