    Return the car of cons cell CONS.  If arg is nil, return nil.
    Error if arg is not nil and not a cons cell.  See also `car-safe'.

How about this:

    Return the car of cons cell (or list) CONS.  If arg is nil, return nil.
    Error if arg is not nil and not a cons cell.  See also `car-safe'.
