The reason I chose such a "verbose" indicator is because of David
Reitter's comments:  If the point is to help people avoid confusion (and
such a mode is turned on by default), using a cryptic indicator is
almost as bad as no indicator at all.  I don't think the extra length is
a huge problem, because it will be very rare to actually see this
indicator, and usually the user will simply hit ^G when they do.

On the other hand, if the point is simply to help advanced users
recognize the situation more quickly, then I suppose the format doesn't
matter much.

Clearly it should get the actual indicator format from a variable, as
everybody in this thread seems have their own preferred format.
So the question is more "What should the default format be?", and the
answer depends strongly on what the intention of the indicator really is.
