Granted, I could only guess, since no actual code was
posted, but the description of the symptoms is quite
revealing.

Not without you posting some minimal code that creates this
slowdown.
If you are interested, please post the shortest Lisp code
that can be used to reproduce and investigate this situation.
In hopes that someone might be able to see why the palette code
slows things down (or suggest improvements to it), here is the
