font lock, rst-mode, and keyboard repeat

Hi,

I'm experiencing a terrible usability problem.  My emacs was built
from CVS:

   GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600) of 2006-05-07

The problem is that in rst-mode
(http://www.merten-home.de/FreeSoftware/rst-mode/), when I hold down
the `-' key to get a row of repeated dashes (needed often in rst
documents), after the first dash, the display doesn't update until
after I release the key.  

* The problem goes away if I turn off font-lock
* My font lock settings are at the default
* Changing the jit-lock customization seems to have no effect
* I don't remember this happening in earlier versions of emacs.  

Can anyone offer a clue as to what the fix might be?
