It depends on the faces...  Some faces are more "in your face" than
others.  The link face is intentionally rather attention grabbing (both
because of its appearance and because of its well-known meaning), which
works well if you want to highlight a link in the midst of normal text,
but is annoying when overused.

My point was that it would be good to _slightly_ distinguish between the
filenames and othe rest of the text, but that using a link face was
excessive.

In general, I think that it's good when the "meat" of the buffer is in
the default face, and faces used to either emphasize or de-emphasize
other stuff as appropriate.  In the case of dired buffers, the filenames
are "the meat".
