cvs-mode-diff ignores selection

GNU Emacs 22.0.50.9 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
 of 2006-08-19 on loiso

all of a sudden "=" in a "*cvs*" buffer displays the diff not for the
marked files but for all modified files.
