FWIW, it doesn't return anything here:

% fc-list 'bitstream vera sans mon' width
% fc-list 'bitstream vera sans mon' width | hd
% 

This is a clean install of the FreeBSD package of bitstream-vera:

% pkg_info | grep bitstream-vera  
bitstream-vera-1.10_2 Bitstream Vera TrueType font collection
%
