As of now, I cannot even reproduce the original problem: with a fresh
source tree from the original tarball of the pretest, Emacs builds
without any problems on that machine. So I can only conclude that the
failure was due to some transient problem, perhaps indeed some screwup
in the file system that got fixed in the meantime.
