Performance issues could be related to having many files and so a big
working copy. Subversion 1.4.X includes a redesign of the WC's
metadata just to speed up these cases, so it'd be interesting to see
what release were they using.

to Karl Fogel, who is (or was, a few months ago) reading this list :)
