My bad. I should have tried -Q. It runs without errors with -Q.

So it appears that /Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs is the
proper thing to call in terminal mode rather than
/Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Resources/bin/emacs although
they are the same.
